I was one of those kids who loved reading so much that I snuck books to read under my desk at school and stayed up late hiding under the covers with my book and a flashlight. I also took great pride in pointing out every typo I saw in books, magazines, food menus, fliers . . . you get the idea.
Eventually, I decided to actually put those skills to good use by getting an undergraduate degree in English Writing and Rhetoric from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. There, I began to learn how to do more than just find errors in text. I learned how to completely rewrite academic essays, how to structure and revise newspaper and magazine articles, how to edit short stories line by line until every sentence flowed, and so much more. I also began working for an indie press and landed my first freelance editing client.
Since then, I’ve been hooked on helping others make their writing shine. In 2011, I received my master’s degree in Writing from The New School in New York City and earned my copyeditor’s certificate. In 2013, I was named a Lambda Literary Fellow, studying genre fiction with Malinda Lo.
As an editor, I love to read just about anything I can get my hands on. I’ve fallen into some more technical fields, such as financial services and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, and I’m not afraid to dig into complicated material. But most importantly, I’ve learned that editing is about more than just picking out typos and rewording awkward sentences—it’s also about helping people and organizations. Ultimately, that’s what gets me out of bed in the morning—helping individuals publish work they’re proud of and helping organizations make high quality and professional products.
Currently, I live in Austin, Texas, and when I’m not editing or reading, you can find me cooking, running (slowly), snuggling with a dog or cat, or flying around on a trapeze (really!). I also know a lot of random facts about the planet Mars and am a huge fan of the UCLA women’s gymnastics team.
